Are we in a desire epidemic?

What do you desire? 


Do you know? 


Does the question excite you with possibilities or deflate you and leave you flat?


What’s your relationship with desire? 


One of the effects of the pandemic was that it flattened our desires. 


Even the little things like my favorite bath gel or favorite foods were unavailable because of supply chain issues. You might not even think of food or your favorite bath gel as a “desire” but I do. Hell, toilet paper became a desire that we couldn’t get!


Our desires come big and small. And paying attention to the small ones is really powerful. Typically, we can respond to those desires quickly and bring them into our lives. Adding to our confidence to pursue bigger desires.


But not during the pandemic.


We definitely had to let go of most of the big things we tend to think about with the word “desire,” like travel, a new car, shopping for a new wardrobe or going on a retreat. 


Everything stopped. 


Desires stopped. 


Then all we wanted was to “get back to normal” and many of us have. Or at least a new version of “normal.” 


But what about those desires? Did they get left behind? 


Did you stop thinking about your favorite shower gel and were just grateful to find shower gel on the shelf? I’m all about gratitude, but did we lose our connection to our desires along the way? 


My question today is, what do you desire? Big or small. 


It may take a moment. Please, take it. Get a cup or tea or favorite cocktail and let yourself imagine… what would feel good? What would bring beauty into your life? Do you want adventure? Do you want solitude? What do you desire?
